Nalgene Wide Mouth 32 oz Review: The Bottle That Refuses to Die
The Nalgene Wide Mouth judged against insulated steel and narrow sports bottles. Here's what the wide opening solves, and why you may want steel as well.

Nalgene Wide Mouth 32 oz Review: Still the Trail Standard
The Bottom Line
Buy it if you want one bottle to stop thinking about. The Nalgene is a single piece of tough translucent plastic with a wide screw opening and a lid on a tether. It is not insulated, it is not elegant, and it is close to indestructible. There's a reason it's the default on trails, in labs and on university desks.
Who should buy this: Hikers and campers. Anyone who wants to track their intake โ the volume markings on the side are genuinely useful. People who keep losing or breaking bottles.
Who should NOT buy this: Anyone who wants cold water in hot weather or hot drinks in cold weather; buy vacuum-insulated steel. People who need a one-handed sip while driving or running. Anyone who wants something that fits every car cupholder.
How We Assessed It
Our assessment weighs this against vacuum-insulated steel bottles and narrow-necked sports bottles, on the things that actually separate them: what a wide screw opening lets you do that a narrow one cannot โ ice, a cleaning brush, drink powder, a filter thread, a scoop from a stream โ what a single moulded piece of thick plastic survives that steel dents at, and what you give up carrying a bottle with no insulation and a mouth too wide to drink from on the move. We also looked at what owners consistently report going wrong, which is odour retention from anything other than water.
The Good
The wide mouth solves several problems at once. Ice cubes go in. A hand and a brush go in for cleaning. Powdered drink mix goes in without a funnel. You can scoop from a stream and fit most water filters directly. Narrow-necked bottles fail at all of these.
It genuinely does not break. One moulded piece of thick copolyester with no seam, no glass and no vacuum wall is a hard thing to destroy โ dropped full onto concrete it scuffs where a steel bottle dents. Damage to a well-used Nalgene is cosmetic, which is why they end up covered in stickers rather than in a bin.
The tethered lid never goes missing. A loop keeps the cap attached to the neck. Trivial engineering, enormously practical โ it's the part everyone else loses.
The volume markings are useful. Graduations up the side turn it into a measuring device, which matters if you're tracking hydration, mixing electrolytes, or rationing water on a long day out.
The Bad
No insulation whatsoever. Cold water is warm within an hour in the sun; the bottle sweats in humidity. This is a plastic bottle, and if temperature retention matters, this is categorically the wrong purchase.
The wide mouth is a bad drinking experience on the move. Take a sip while walking briskly and you'll wear some of it. Trying to drink while running or driving is genuinely messy โ a narrow spout or straw lid is far better for that.
It's bulky and often doesn't fit cupholders. The wide body defeats a lot of car and bike cage designs. Check before assuming.
It picks up smells from strong drinks. Fine with water forever; leave squash or electrolyte mix in it for a couple of days and you'll notice. The wide opening at least makes proper scrubbing easy.
Who It's Really For
Anyone who wants a bottle to be infrastructure rather than an accessory. Buy it for the trail, the gym bag and the desk, expect it to be scuffed and ugly within a year, and expect it to still be working long after several insulated bottles have been dented or lost. If you want cold water at 3pm, own one of these and a steel bottle โ they're solving different problems.
Final Verdict
Price-Per-Value Rating: 8.8/10
One moving part โ a screw cap on a tether โ and nothing in it that wears out. The lack of insulation and the sloshy wide-mouth drinking experience are real and inherent โ but as a piece of gear you buy once and stop thinking about, very little competes.
